The victim was discharged from hospital after a few hours and sent home.
Detective Constable Andrew Bromley of West Didsbury CID said: "I am certain that someone in the pub that evening will have witnessed the argument inside the pub earlier and might recall information which may lead to identifying the offender.
"This was a severe and extremely violent attack requiring hospital treatment of six staples to the side of the victims head .
"I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the Farmers Arms last Tuesday night who remembers seeing anything that could help find the person who carried out this vicious assault and help bring the attacker to justice.
