Healthy Eating

4cPupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Newall Green enjoyed a morning at Altrincham’s Marks and Spencer store which they visited to learn more about healthy eating and the sourcing and supply of good quality produce.

Members of the school’s Cookery Club had been invited along by the store as part of Saint Paul’s healthy eating initiative, which aims to emphasise the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise to its pupils.

The club is run by Assisant Headteacher Seamus McAuliffe, Pastoral Assistant Mrs Angie Holland and Ms Jenny Hardy, Head of Food Technology.

“Like many schools, we encourage healthy eating. We want our pupils to take on board the concept of healthy eating and to show them how this can become a way of life, at school and at home,” explained McAuliffe. “They really enjoyed this visit where they were able to learn about the sourcing of healthy food and how it is then displayed and promoted by the retailers. We were delighted by how enthusiastic our pupils were during this visit where they asked many pertinent questions.”

“We want to show our pupils that they can eat healthily while still having the foods they like, as long as they source good quality products and cook things the right way.” He added.

“It’s about teaching youngsters to choose the right types of foods and the right cooking methods so that they have meals with a healthy nutritional balance,” commented Jenny Hardy. “We are aiming to encourage good habits which will benefit our pupils, and their families, both now and in the future.”

“As a school, we have kept a close eye on the school meals that we provide. We’ve adapted our rules and now all fizzy drinks have been replaced with water,” commented Head Teacher, Wiktor Daron. “Healthier children do better in learning and life so we want to help our pupils make positive changes to their behavior so they can reach their full potential.”
