Engineering Challenge

11cGifted engineering pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe took part in a Challenge Day focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills.

Pupils had to work in pairs to build a remote control car, without any instructions! The requirements were that the car had to be able to move forwards and backwards. It also had to include a light and a buzzer so the pupils had to work out how they could incorporate a switch.

Once the cars had been built, the pupils decorated their creations and then raced them against each other.

“This was a great opportunity for our pupils,” said Anita Keegan, Science teacher and the teacher responsible for the Gifted and Talented group.  “As well as being an exciting experience for our pupils, it was a challenge packed with learning across the STEM subjects.”

Ms Keegan added “The challenge was based on real life engineering challenges to which our pupils could relate.”

“Involvement in projects such as this is something which the school is very keen to support,” explained Head Teacher, Wiktor Daron. “The day provided a challenging opportunity for our pupils interested in engineering and gives them an insight into what it would be like to work in an engineering related environment.”

“The project allowed them to develop the transferable skills of team working, creativity, problem solving and time management,” continued Mr Daron.
