Diversity in Dance
Wythenshawe showed it can definitely dance, when ‘Downtown Dance’ arrived in town. The dance extravaganza featured a mix of dance styles, demonstrated by amateur and professional dancers.
Visitors enjoyed performances of line dancing, ballet, modern, freestyle, jive, Romanian, Bollywood, Irish and Morris dancing with added inspiration from the professional dance companies – the Dalziel Dancers, Kyle McKitty Crew and Physical Jerks.
A total of 13 local dance groups comprising more than 400 dancers showed off their talent at the event. The youngest dancer was just three years old. Members of the public enjoyed the free taster sessions on offer and the ‘Cha-cha-cha’ proved a popular crowd puller.
The event, which was organised by Wythenshawe Regeneration team in conjunction with St Modwen plc and town centre partners, resulted in a large number of enquiries for many of the 54 different dance classes held in the area each week.
The 2009 ‘What, Where, Wythenshawe’ events line-up continues with Summersonic – the summer holiday activity programme for 8-16 year olds – during August, followed by the Garden City Festival on 26 September.
