Volunteers Go GaGa

Dozens of volunteers gave a new lease of life to a Wythenshawe green spot, and will celebrate their achievements by watching singer Lady Gaga at a free concert thanks to a Manchester City Council campaign.

More than 50 volunteers, accompanied by City Council street environment managers, spent a day clearing weeds and fly tipped litter from Wythenshawe Brook off Amberley Drive in Newall Green.

The event was organised by the City Council working with Orange Rockcorps, and all volunteers will be given free tickets to see bands and DJs including Lady Gaga and N-Dubz at the Give, Get Given concert at Manchester Apollo on  13th July.

The event was also held as part of the year-long Proud Of Manchester campaign, which celebrates life in the city’s neighbourhoods and encourages residents to take pride in Manchester’s green spaces.

Councillor Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Events like this are perfect for showing people that volunteering can be fun as well as rewarding.

“The volunteers did a great job of clearing the brook and this will make a real difference to people living in Newall Green. I hope they all enjoy the free concert next month and I’d like to ask others to get involved in similar events now being organised.”

More clean-up events are being held throughout the summer, with anyone who gives four hours of their time getting one of the free tickets. Anyone interested in taking part should visit orangerockcorps.co.uk or text ROCK to 80889.
