Making Sense of Maths

Children at Baguley Hall Primary School recently took part in the latest Numbers at Work morning with business representatives from the BW3 (Businesses Working with Wythenshawe) Group.

Over 180 children have now taken part in the programme that aims to highlight the importance of mathematics and numbers in everyday life and in particular in the workplace.

Pupils completed a range of problem solving challenges with their business volunteers including designing a new fruit drink, transporting ‘oil’, sending a valuable parcel oversees, planning a party and even how to score a penalty!

The morning involved volunteers from Microsoft, Shell, Manchester City Football Club, Parkway Green, Manchester Airport, Lloyds Banking Group and the Wythenshawe Regeneration Team.

Headteacher John McKie said. “ Our pupils were thrilled to work with local business volunteers. Children were not only able to see how mathematics is important to their futures they were also able to learn more about the world of work.

Manchester Airport Community Relations Manager and BW3 Chair, Wendy Sinfield added. “ Our members thoroughly enjoy working with young people on the Numbers at Work programme. We have had a super morning at Baguley Hall and very much hope that the children may become our work colleagues in a few years time.”

The BW3 Group works to support the social and economic regeneration of Wythenshawe and for further information please contact Paul Hodson 0161 489 5281.
