Winter Football
Manchester Mencap held their winter football tournament at Parklands High School, Wythenshawe, despite thick fog and biting cold.
More than thirty learning disabled players, volunteers, and supporters from Wythenshawe Wanderers , Newton Heathers and Whalley Rangers turned out for the 7 a side competition with one non disabled volunteer in each team.
Playing on their home pitch, the wanderers proved unbeatable in the knockout stages, reaching the final against Newton Heathers, who defeated Whalley Rangers by the odd goal in their semi.
A close finish looked to be on the cards at 1-1 in the final, but Wanderers scored three in the last five minutes to make the title.
The charity’s football groups which operate under Mencap’s Physical Activity Project, receive no funding and are run by committed volunteers, but this is no longer sustainable. Organisers are inviting organizations or individuals to make a donation. For more information visit http://everyclick.com/manchestermencap or register at everyclick.com
