What Would You Like to be?
Several pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Newall Green have had a taste of what real life’s all about with their work related learning course placements. The school offers work placement opportunities to its Year 10 and 11 providing them with a great chance to experience working life and develop the skills they’re going to need for the future.
The school has found that a period of work experience is often the first step on the ladder to successful employment for some of its pupils; employers have the opportunity to identify and engage with promising talent and the students have the opportunity to make a more informed choice about what career is right for them and demonstrate to future employers how they have applied their studies to the world of work.”
“Employers value work placements,” said Alan Chapman, the school’s Careers and Work Related Learning Co-ordinator. “It allows the students to develop an understanding of the world of work and equips them with the skills and attitudes needed for a successful future.”
“I am delighted with the way the students apply themselves to this work and make the most of these opportunities. One pupil who particularly deserves a mention is Isaac Shoniran who enjoyed a work placement at Parkway Green Housing Trust,” continued Mr Chapman. “Isaac impressed those he was working with and acted as an excellent ambassador for the school.”
“Isaac was a pleasure to work with and we all enjoyed his placement,” commented Wayne Ashbury, Senior Surveyor for Parkway Green.
Isaac said “I had a great time at Parkway Green working in all the different teams, but I enjoyed being with the IT team the most.”
“As a school we work hard to develop relationships with local businesses which can offer work experience placements,” said Mr Wiktor Daron, Head Teacher at Saint Paul’s. “We are very grateful to those employers who are kind enough to offer our pupils such a valuable experience. In addition to the excellent opportunity to see what work is really like, the placements result in increased self-confidence and independence and allow the students to develop their communication skills.”
